Our Spiritual Teachers: Geshe Sherab • His Holiness the Dalai Lama Geshe Sherab
Geshe Thubten Sherab was born 37 years ago in Manang in Nepal into a Kagyu-Nyingma family with 5 brothers. And although Kopan Monastery is a Gelupa lineage center, Geshe la was enrolled as a monk at the age of 9 years; it was the quality of education available which made Kopan the chosen place. At the age of 22 years, and after considering becoming an interpreter to Milarepa Center for Geshe Lobsang Jampa, Geshe la changed his mind and moved to Sera Je Monastery for further study and the completion of the TsoKrampa degree. He finished an additional one year of study at Gyudmed and completed some teaching and retreat work at Bodhgaya at the FPMT Root Institute as well as Sera Je and Kopan. In late summer of 2001, Geshe la left Nepal for the first time to travel around the globe and accept the assignment of working with and teaching the dharma to the FPMT Buddhist communities in Santa Fe and Taos. In 2005 Geshe la returned to Nepal and accepted the role at Kopan Monastery as Headmaster. Where he is now responsibile for the education, supervision, and standards of three areas at Kopan: the school, the debate training, and the Tantric training. |
