Nyung Nä (pronounced nyoo-nay) is a practice of Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion. It includes taking the Mahayana precepts as well as committing to complete fasting (that is, no eating and no drinking) and silence (except for in session) on the second day. Applicants should be in good health, especially being free of hypo- or hyper-glycemic concerns, including diabetes. According to Ven. Thubten Chodron, "the fast we are to abide in is to abstain from physical, verbal, and mental destructive actions and to abstain from ignorant, angry, and clinging attitudes".

"Doing Nyung Nä is the way to save yourself from being born in the lower realms. It's the quick way to get enlightened for sentient beings and the quick way to free all sentient beings from the oceans of samsaric suffering and bring them to enlightenment"   -   Lama Zopa Rinpoche
